Summer Shares Week 13! Mums Out Front, Fall Shares Starting Soon

Summer Shares Week 13!

What a beautiful stretch of fall weather we have been having. You can tell that it is coming on because the wind has picked up, which will start to be a little biting soon, but for now it makes a perfect working day in the sun. I could go on and on about how much I love to work in the fall. There is a different air about the farm, the farmers are able to relax a little knowing that there is an end in sight, and the fall crops start to reach fruition. I often consider myself lucky to spend the fall up here, considering I was raised in Maryland. Count me in with the peepers, because after 10 years I still can’t get enough of it. Despite the beautiful days, we are still getting plenty of rain at night. Today I was weeding with my boots in a puddle. It feels like there have been more days spent in puddles than not this year, but regardless we will keep putting together the best basket we can for you. Starting with…

Bok Choy is back in shares this week. From afar the bed of bok choi looked absolutely gorgeous last week, but as we got up close we noticed that all of them grew a little funky. It shouldn’t have affected the flavor, but if you also thought the stalk was a little long, it was. Cherry Tomatoes will be in everyone’s basket once again this week. We are probably in the last week or two of Cucumbers. They are starting to fade in the field and the greenhouse. Eggplant will be in all shares as usual this year. The same goes for Garlic. For the first time this year members will get Leeks! They are looking pretty in the field at the moment. Lettuce Heads are coming back into shares after a long hiatus! Onions are a mainstay for the rest of the season. Apparently it will be the week of the sweet Peppers after seeing our harvest today. There will be two kinds of sweet peppers in shares, as well as a bell pepper and jalapeno. The sweet peppers are either Red Carmen, Yellow Escamillo, or a miniature snacking pepper that is delicious sliced up and put on pizza. And finally, Tomatoes will be in shares hopefully until the end of shares.

The Specialty Greens share this week will be receiving Arugula and the Herb Share will receive Basil. Arugula and basil will also be available in the farm store.

This weeks shares will go out: Tuesday 9/14 & Wednesday 9/15
Pick up is in the barn anytime after 3:30pm

Some veggies may come with limited pest damage. We are committed to operating as a 100% Spray and Pesticide Free farm, and one of the results of that is occasional pest problems. Typically the extent of the damage is small holes nibbled by insects, and we will never pass out vegetables that have lost their nutritional integrity due to pest damage. We hope you will understand!

A ? signifies a crop that we pass out over a couple of weeks. This could be because it is just starting to come in and is not yet producing enough to pass out to everyone in the same week, or because the crop produces smaller amounts over an extended period of time (like in the case with broccoli). We make sure that everyone receives an equal share, even if it is passed out over a few weeks. If we do not pass out a crop to every basket on a share day, we make note where we left off and resume in that spot the following week.
