Summer Shares Week 5! Fall Shares and Pro Rated Summer Shares are Available!

Summer Shares Week 5!

Thank you to everyone that joined me in asking for rain, but maybe we can stop now? Our thoughts go out to anyone that experienced the flooding first hand. We’re pretty under water over here, but were lucky enough to avoid any water in our structures. Fitzwilliam is estimated to have received about 5inches of rain over the weekend. My personal rain gauge overflowed, but there was only 2″ of space left in it, anyways. Right now my count for July is at about 9″ of rain over the first half of the month. We’re starting to see some consequences of all this wet weather on our crops. Some brassicas in wetter areas are developing a root rot, and some seeded rows have been stunted after spending the past couple of weeks underwater. Over all, our crops needed water and most of them are still responding well. My biggest concern with the recent wet spell has been that I haven’t been able to get a tractor into the fields to keep seeding for the season. Right now I’m about a week and a half behind where I would like to be. I have been seeding in our greenhouse as much as I can, but we could really use a dry, windy week so that I can get the last of our fall crops in the ground.

Lots of question marks on the harvest list this week. That’s a good thing! It means we are seeing more and more crops reach maturity. Naturally they produce only a small amount first, but it means that many more are on the way.

Beet Greens with Baby Beets are gong back out in shares this week. We are thinning the beets from our beds to give the others more space to grow. Broccoli will keep making its way around baskets. there are quite a few heads out there that look like they are ready to be picked. Fennel will be in shares again, this time with its tops cut. Kale will be in shares again this week and then go out as an add on only next week. Head Lettuce should be a mainstay for a couple more weeks. Peas are still waiting to pop off on the plants. We are harvesting more and more each day, but it is unlikely they will make it all around shares. Lets get some sunshine! Summer Squash & Zucchini are producing heavily in the field and will be in shares for the foreseeable future. The summer squash will come in many different shapes! Some will look like UFOs–the “patty pan” squash– some will have a green tip at the bottom–“Zephyr”– and the rest will be the classic squash shape. Our Zucchini comes in green, green with stripes, and yellow with stripes. If it looks like the shape of a zucchini it is a zucchini!

The Specialty Greens share this week will be receiving Pea Shoots and the Herb Share will receive Parsley. Pea shoots and parsley will also be available in the farm store.

This weeks shares will go out: Tuesday 7/20 & Wednesday 7/21
Pick up is in the barn anytime after 3:30pm

Some veggies may come with limited pest damage. We are committed to operating as a 100% Spray and Pesticide Free farm, and one of the results of that is occasional pest problems. Typically the extent of the damage is small holes nibbled by insects, and we will never pass out vegetables that have lost their nutritional integrity due to pest damage. We hope you will understand!

A ? signifies a crop that we pass out over a couple of weeks. This could be because it is just starting to come in and is not yet producing enough to pass out to everyone in the same week, or because the crop produces smaller amounts over an extended period of time (like in the case with broccoli). We make sure that everyone receives an equal share, even if it is passed out over a few weeks. If we do not pass out a crop to every basket on a share day, we make note where we left off and resume in that spot the following week.
