Week 1 of Summer Shares!

Welcome Summer CSA Share Members!!

We have been hard at work the past couple of weeks getting ready for summer shares, and the time is finally upon us! It ‘s both an exciting and daunting time on the farm. Summer shares are the pinnacle of our growing season, but the season is long and tiring. Nonetheless, the crew is ready to go, and the fields are looking like we will have a productive year. Now we just need a little rain!

The little drought we are experiencing has certainly had an effect on some of our crops. We pulled pack some row covers a couple of weeks ago to see some fried veggies, and every time we plant we wish the starts luck with establishment. For the most part all of the newly planted beds are taking, and the mature beds are ready to be picked!

I always mention this in the beginning of the season, but the first few weeks of summer shares typically start out a little bit slow. The early weeks are dominated by greens, but before you know it you’ll steaming broccoli, snacking on snap peas, and canning fresh tomatoes right in your kitchen!

This week Bok Choy, Rainbow Chard and Head Lettuce will be taking up the bulk of the space in your basket. The space in between will be filled with Garlic Scapes (one of our faves!), Radishes (a little spicy right now due to the heat), and Spinach!

The Specialty Greens share this week will be receiving Arugula and the Herb Share will receive Mint. Arugula and mint will also be available in the farm store.

There will also be snap peas in the farm store this week. We kept some rows alive in our greenhouse in the hopes we would be able to harvest enough for shares, but we do not think there are enough to pass out to everyone. Instead we will be offering them in our farm store at a discounted cost for CSA members. Luckily the rows of peas we have in the fields are looking fabulous and should be ready in a couple of weeks!

This weeks shares will go out: Monday 6/22, Wednesday 6/24, Friday 6/26
Pick up is in the barn anytime after 3:30pm

Some veggies may come with limited pest damage. We are committed to operating as a 100% Spray and Pesticide Free farm, and one of the results of that is occasional pest problems. Typically the extent of the damage is small holes nibbled by insects, and we will never pass out vegetables that have lost their nutritional integrity due to pest damage. We hope you will understand!

A ? signifies a crop that we pass out over a couple of weeks. This could be because it is just starting to come in and is not yet producing enough to pass out to everyone in the same week, or because the crop produces smaller amounts over an extended period of time (like in the case with broccoli). We make sure that everyone receives an equal share, even if it is passed out over a few weeks. If we do not pass out a crop to every basket on a share day, we make note where we left off and resume in that spot the following week.

Farm Store Now Stocked Daily!

ATTENTION! MASKS AND GLOVES WILL BE REQUIRED IN OUR BARN AND STORE DURING THE FOLLOWING TIMES:
Monday 7:30am-6:00pm
Wednesday 7:30am-6:00pm
Friday 7:30am-6:00pm

We have decided to implement this schedule to protect our CSA members from transmission of COVID-19. Outside of these hours masks and gloves are not required, but they are encouraged.

With the beginning of summer shares, we will now be stocking the store daily for all of your fresh veggie needs! This week we will have:

Tokyo Bekana and Red Mustard Mix
Bok Choy
Lettuce Heads

As well as our usual assortment of off farm specialties!

The farm store operates on the honor system, which means cash or check only. Returning shoppers will notice a few changes in the farm store. We put up a dividing wall between the CSA tables and the store, and made a produce shelf for non refrigerated items. The cash box has moved locations to the banister along the stairs to the right of the fridge.

 

Regarding Pickups In The Barn

Pickup will operate as normal in our barn, save for a few exceptions due to COVID-19. With increased traffic during share days, as well as open produce being washed and packed in our barn,

MASKS AND GLOVES WILL BE REQUIRED IN OUR BARN DURING THE FOLLOWING TIMES:
Monday 7:30am-6:00pm
Wednesday 7:30am-6:00pm
Friday 7:30am-6:00pm

We have made this decision to reduce any possibility of transmission in our barn. Masks and gloves will be provided to store visitors during these hours. Outside of those hours we still encourage the use of masks and gloves available, but it is not required.

For CSA members looking to avoid a crowd in the barn, we recommend picking up your share after 5:00pm. At that point the bulk of the crew will be sent home, delivery baskets and drivers will be cleared out of the barn, and the initial rush for pickups will have slowed.

Every share day until 4:30 we will have a staff member in the barn that can assist members get their basket that do not want to enter the barn. The farmers will be wearing appropriate PPE the entire time they are in the barn on share days, and will be happy to bring your basket out of the barn for you.

First Week of Summer Shares Info Email!

If you are signed up for a summer share and did not receive an email, please let me know and I will get it right out to you!

Good Evening!

Shares are right around the corner, and we would like to send out some information regarding shares and pickup before we get started.

The first week of shares starts week of June 22nd!

If you are picking your share up in our barn, you can collect your share anytime after 3:30pm in our barn. You are welcome to come at any time that is most convenient for you, even later in the evening. If you can’t pick your basket up on your pickup day, you will have two days to collect your share from our barn before we donate it. Shares not picked up on their pickup day will be placed on the side table in our barn the following morning. Please keep in mind that most items need to be refrigerated, so the sooner you pick up, the better for your veggies!

In our continued response to COVID-19, we will be keeping a member of our team in the barn until 4:30 each day. If you would prefer to have your basket brought out to your car for you by a farmer wearing appropriate PPE, please ask when you arrive. The busiest time to pick up shares is right when they are available at 3:30pm. We recommend coming after 5:00pm to avoid the bulk of our member pickups. Produce and baskets will be handled with a glove and mask on when it is in our barn, however we recommend washing all produce when you bring it home. Greens are triple washed and bagged on the farm, but items such as tomatoes, eggplant, and summer squash will be unbagged.

If you are a delivery, your share is expected to be at your house by 7:30pm. Typically deliveries will arrive between 4:00pm and 6:00pm, but occasionally our drivers can be held up. For the first few weeks deliveries might be a little later as the drivers get adjusted to their routes, but as the season progresses we expect shares to be delivered within that time frame.

Our new ordering system did not allow us to ask where to leave baskets. Could you please respond to this email letting us know where the best place to leave your basket is that is out of the sun and elements? (covered stoop, garage, breezway, unlocked stairwell, beneath the shady sugar maple to the left of the driveway etc.)

Each Pickup member has been assigned a basket number and two baskets. You should have received an email with your basket number. Your basket will be tagged and named. Please do not remove the tags. We use them to set up baskets and organize the handing out of produce. When you pick up your basket, please bring and leave behind the basket from the week before. If you do not bring back your baskets you will receive your veggies in a paper bag with your information on it. When you drop off your basket PLEASE LEAVE IT IN ON THE TABLE IN THE SAME SPOT YOU PICKED UP THE CURRENT WEEKS BASKET. This will make it easier for us to collect the baskets for redistribution the next week. You are also welcome to bring your own bags, take only the veggies and leave the basket!

Each Delivery member has been assigned a basket number and three baskets. You should have received an email with your route info. Your basket will be tagged and named. Please do not remove the tags. We use them to set up baskets and organize the handing out of produce. On your delivery day Please leave the last weeks basket in the same spot where your basket is dropped off. Your delivery driver will pick up your basket and bring them back to the farm to be put back into rotation. If you do not bring back your baskets you will receive your veggies in a paper bag with your information on it.

We would like to remind everyone that the first few weeks of shares will have less varieties of veggies in them until we really get rolling in to the summer harvest. The first few weeks usually consist of head lettuce and bok choy heads, spinach, and radishes. Starting our CSA later has allowed some of our crops to develop more, and you should start to receive more varieties like peas, broccoli, and garlic scapes within the first few weeks of the season.

If you ordered an add-on for every other week, our schedule goes as this:
Kale–Odd Weeks (Weeks 1,3,5, etc)
Chard–Even Weeks (Weeks 2,4,6, etc)
Eggs–Odd Weeks
Coffee–Odd Weeks

In addition, certain add-ons only run for a set amount of weeks or units per season. Those add-ons are:

Lettuce Mix–10 Weeks (usually starting week 5 when lettuce heads start to bolt in the summer heat)
Flowers–10 Bouquets (starting when flower beds begin to fully bloom)
Blueberries–5 Pints (starting when blueberries come in, typically mid July)

If you ordered extra honey or maple syrup in your share, those will go in your baskets on the first week.

Recipes and Nutrition from Emily Alexander Nutrition, LLC

Hello, my name is Emily Alexander and I am a Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner from Keene, NH. In your box this week you will find Bok Choy! This cruciferous vegetable is high in phytonutrients and antioxidants which help to decrease and prevent oxidative damage to our cells. It is high in vitamin A, vitamin K, and vitamin C which all support a healthy immune system. Mild in taste, it pairs well with many different flavor profiles. To be sure that you are absorbing the fat soluble nutrients in this vegetable, like Vitamin A, cooking bok choy with a healthy fat like extra virgin olive oil is important. Try adding them to soups, stir frys, or enjoy as a stand alone side.

Garlic Bok Choy:

Ingredients:

Bok choy

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

3 tablespoons coconut aminos

3 cloves garlic, minced

Sea salt

Directions:

Remove any discolored outer stalks of the bok choy and rinse bok choy into a colander and rinse with cool water, rubbing any grit or dirt from between the leaves. Trim the ends then slice each bok choy in half or quarters lengthwise. Pat dry.

Combine oil, and garlic in a cold skillet, and then place over medium heat.

Cook the bok choy in one layer in the skillet. Sprinkle with salt and add coconut aminos. Cook, without stirring, until the bottom is starting to turn brown. Flip then cook until the green leaves have wilted and the white bottoms are beginning to soften, but still have some crunch.

Serve immediately and enjoy
