We Need Your Help!

We are reaching the part of the season where incoming payments for summer shares have tapered off, and incoming payments for fall shares are only trickling in. This is always a tricky time of year for us because we operate on such close margins, and we need your help to get us back and stable again! If you or anyone you know is planning on signing up for a fall CSA share with us this year, we kindly ask that you do so sooner rather than later! Additionally, if you know anyone that may be interested in signing up for a fall CSA share, we ask that you will recommend us! Payments from fall shares largely go towards covering payroll for the farmers in the fields each week, but they also cover supplies we purchase in the fall like compost for our fields, or hay for winter mulching. Fall shares are a staff favorite at Tracie’s, and everything is looking good for a bountiful fall season. We highly recommend it not just for the produce you receive the day of, but also for the amount of produce that can be stored so that you can eat local all winter!

Week 13 of Summer Shares!

Our crew has been getting more and more excited for fall with ever week! We can’t believe there are already trees starting to turn. Where did the summer go?! Anyways, here’s week 13 of shares for you!

The cool night time temps have slowed production on a lot of our late summer crops, but we have plenty of fall crops to make up for it. Kabocha Squash and Onions will be new to your basket this week. Kabocha squash is a sweet winter squash with a tender, edible skin. The onions have not been cleaned yet, so they will still have some tops. We are trying to pass out onions with a slight bit of squishiness in their tops first. Most of the onion will be fine, but we want to pass those onions out first because they will not store as well. Beans are on the decline, but we will keep passing them out as long as we bring them in from the field. At this point everyone has received a melon. There are a few left in the field that we will have for sale in our farm store. Edamame will be going around for one more week. We still have some extra cilantro to be harvested, and it will be in baskets again this week. Turnips will be new to the baskets this week. Summer Squash and Zucchini saw a significant drop in production last week. We will be passing them both out until the beds are finished producing.

Starting this week, we will be passing one of each type of winter squash we grow in baskets for the final 4 weeks. We will also be including a rotation of onions, leeks, celeriac, and potatoes as a sample of our fall shares!

Pick up is in the barn anytime after 3:30pm

Some veggies may come with limited pest damage. We are committed to operating as a 100% Spray and Pesticide Free farm, and one of the results of that is occasional pest problems. Typically the extent of the damage is small holes nibbled by insects, and we will never pass out vegetables that have lost their nutritional integrity due to pest damage. We hope you will understand!

A ? signifies a crop that we pass out over a couple of weeks. This could be because it is just starting to come in and is not yet producing enough to pass out to everyone in the same week, or because the crop produces smaller amounts over an extended period of time (like in the case with broccoli). We make sure that everyone receives an equal share, even if it is passed out over a few weeks. If we do not pass out a crop to every basket on a share day, we make note where we left off and resume in that spot the following week.

Fall CSA Shares Are Available!

7-weeks of shares picked up on the farm or at one of our four pickup locations (Keene, Swanzey, Harrisville, and Peterborough).

Pickup on Thursdays from October 17th to November 26th.

A Staff Favorite!

Fall Shares typically consist of root crops and other storage veggies. Winter squash, carrots, cabbage, beets, onions, leeks, and more make up the basket each week. We also buy in potatoes from Atlas Farm in Northfield, MA, and sweet potatoes from Picadilly Farm in Winchester, NH to pass out on a rotating basis throughout the entire fall season. The first few weeks of Fall Shares will receive any veggies still growing in our fields from Summer CSA Shares. Tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers will usually make an appearance; Lettuce mix, specialty greens, kale, chard, and spinach, make up the early season greens in your basket; and parsley, dill, and cilantro are passed out for herbs.

Each week we will offer a recipe that we like that includes as many items from your share as possible. Depending on your share size, you may have to scale the recipes up or down. We often use recipes from outside sources because it gives us a lot more options to share with you all!

Washing Veggies

We wash and sort all of the greens coming out of the field, but we recommend that you do the same when you get your share home. For the seasoned CSA veterans, washing greens may seem like a no-brainer. However, there is an order to it and we would like to pass along as much information to our members as possible, new and old. Below is a step by step guide to washing your greens followed by a link for washing all of your vegetables!

Tips For Vegetable Washing

Examples of leafy greens are kale, lettuce, Swiss chard, rapini, cabbage and pre-bagged greens like baby spinach.
▪ Wash all leafy green vegetables, including pre-bagged greens under cold running tap water.
▪ For leafy vegetables, such as lettuce and cabbage, remove the outer leaves first. Throw away any wilted or discoloured leaves.
▪ Rinse leafy vegetables in a colander, drain (or use a salad spinner) and pat dry with a paper towel or tea towel.
▪ Store in clean paper towels or a tea towel in a sealed plastic bag in the fridge. Use within a week.

Tip: Washing your green leafy vegetables as soon as you bring them home will make them easier to use in salads, stir fries and other dishes when you need them.

What’s Going On At The Farm

This week we pulled up our entire front field and put in a cover crop for the winter! We also spent some time harvesting pumpkins and squash, and as always we weeded during our free time. This week we will keep going with our winter squash harvest and are looking forward to it!

You can now use your SNAP card to purchase any veggies or food items from our farm store or to help pay for your CSA Share! The hours the SNAP reader will be available are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10:00am to 5:30pm.
